GLSEN believes that every student has the right to a safe, supportive, and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 education. As a national network of educators, students, and local GLSEN Chapters, they are dedicated to making this right a reality.
GLSEN's research and experience have identified four key ways that schools can foster a safe and supportive environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. These Four Supports are central to GLSEN's programs, advocacy, research, and policy initiatives:
Activating Supportive Educators: GLSEN emphasizes the importance of educators who play a critical role in creating LGBTQ-inclusive classroom environments. Supportive teachers and staff are essential in fostering acceptance and safety for all students.
Advocating for Inclusive & Affirming Curriculum: GLSEN advocates for the adoption of inclusive and affirming curricula that not only support LGBTQ students but also raise awareness and understanding among all students. Such curricula are vital for promoting diversity and inclusivity in the classroom.
Passing and Implementing Protective Policies: GLSEN works to pass and enforce policies that ensure LGBTQ students can learn and thrive in safe, inclusive, and accepting schools. These policies are fundamental to protecting students from discrimination and harassment.
Supporting Student-Led Clubs and GSAs: GLSEN recognizes the importance of student-led clubs and Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs). These groups are instrumental in building community, providing peer support, and driving positive change within schools.
Through these Four Supports, GLSEN aims to create educational environments where every student is respected, valued, and empowered to succeed.
